I’ve asked the moderators just a few basic questions about the intricacies of Kinja but it doesn’t seem like any answer is ever forthcoming. Like, why can’t we delete or edit comments? I feel like my best option is, other than on main articles/posts like this, just refrain from making comments completely, maybe even just deactivate my account altogether.

Use the tag “Kinja Help”. I’ve always gotten a reply from someone in tech that can either answer my question or look into an issue.

You could try the third option of not caring as much about the things you say anonymously to other anonymous people on the internet.

I mean...no matter how big the shitstorm (especially on oppo), people’s memories are short. They have real shit to deal with offline. They’re not going to care too much about what Not In Detroit said two weeks ago or whatever. And if they do, they just stop interacting with you, which is just fine.

Bottom line; no matter the platform for discussion, you’re never going to find a place where you get along with everyone so long as humans are involved. Accept it. Non-existence is a non-option right now, so just take the good with the bad and don’t let choking on a bone stop you from enjoying the rest of the fish.

I don’t recall being asked this but comments are editable for 15 minutes after first posting and cannot be deleted. A mod can dismiss a comment if you wish which will take it out of public visibility but it will still technically exist and still be visible if you have a direct link. I think it may also still show on your profile but don’t quote me on that.

As for why? I don’t know and none of the mods have any say over that. It’s Kinja, this is how it is and you have to decide if you can work with that.

Posts (articles) can be deleted, but replies (comments) cannot. A post can be edited at any time, but a reply can only be edited within the first 15 minutes. After that, it becomes permanent.

We’re mods, not programmers. We don’t do this because we’re paid (we aren’t), we do it so Oppositelock doesn’t turn into a cesspool (also because it’s invitation only now so there’s that). Ask the people that work on Kinja and get paid to do it.

I should clarify. Prospective Opponauts can still request authorship on one of the decades-old threads that I still dig through and read, but when authorship is granted, and “invitation” is sent to said prospective Opponaut and then they must click “accept invitation” in order to receive full Oppositelock powers.
